Why I avoid some genre in Anime?

Credits to Gigguk

This entry is purely my opinion on a certain genre of anime and please remember that opinion does not equal as fact. Opinion is not about right or wrong but my opinion can be the same with your opinion and vice versa. I'm not forcing my opinion to my readers. And please note that a certain anime genre is not made for everyone because we humans have their own personal preferences. So keep that in mind before reading this :D

Last week I promised that I’m going to explain why I avoid some specific genre of anime nowadays. Lately anime is starting to feel saturated. A lot of anime nowadays is just ecchi or harem or slice of life genre. I know that sex sells.. But how can I convince others that anime is good if it looks like a legit porn? It’s not like that I hate fanservice (baka! >///<). I like seeing them! I’m a grown ass man!  But isn’t there any other better way to attract us as consumer to watch anime?

Personally, I slowly agreed with Hayao Miyazaki’s rant about “Anime industry is filled with otaku”. Just look at last season’s Danmachi for example. It’s like an anime inspired from otaku’s wet dream. It was like
*Otaku wakes up from his wet dream*
“I JUST HAD THE BEST WET DREAM EVER!”
*writes down the wet dream that he just had*
*post it on blog*
*make manga/light novel out of it*
*anime producer sees it*
*makes anime adaptation on it*
*Profit*

Seriously tho, that Hestia’s boob string is filling every pixiv and other image boards in the internet. Why everybody is attracted to that string attached to her boobs? Personally I like my woman with no strings attached (there you go, a stripper joke)
I've waited for a perfect time to put that joke here seriously....

So, back to the topic! I avoid harem genre because I know that the ultimate winner that the main male protagonist will choose is only one.
Not the main heroine
Not the osananajimi (childhood friend)
Not the other harem candidate than randomly shows up in the middle of the season
Not the twintailed pettan tsundere
Not the kuudere
Not the Yandere
The one that the harem male protagonist usually choose is
VIRGINITY!
I CHOOSE NOT TO CHOOSE ANY OF THESE GIRLS BECAUSE I AM TOO STUPID TO CHOOSE OR TOO DENSE TO AWARE OF IT! GODDAMMIT!
It’s usually goes the same way.. well not all of it. But like 98% of harem genre usually ends up that way.

Because it’s always end up the same way, why would I watch that? Except there’s a twist in the series or unique selling point like Noucome that offers a super hilarious anime. Seriously, it’s just hilarious, even though it’s not worth rewatching for me haha

I usually avoid moeshit anime. Well I used to like this kind of stuff, I watched Kiniro Mosaic, GochiUsa, and other moeshit. It’s just cute girls doing cute things. Yeah I know you are adorable and cute, yeah we get it. But again, I will watch it if there’s an unique selling point like Non Non Biyori. Non Non Biyori is just different. Their setting is in the countryside of Japan which is rarely exposed in anime, *well there’s Barakamon and many others actually*. Yeah they are cute girls doing cute things, but they are doing it the countryside ways, which is unique compared to typical generic slice of life in the town. Besides the soundtrack of Non Non Biyori is soooooo damn relaxing.. I think the birth of moeshit genre is because of K-On. Yeah they execute it nicely. Maybe if I watch it now (not during my college days) I wouldn't watch this anime because THEY DID NOTHING BUT DRINK TEA AND EAT DELICIOUS CAKE!

The sense of progress is also the reason why I avoid watching slice of life genre nowadays. THERE’S NO SENSE OF PROGRESS IN SLICE OF LIFE ANIME! It’s just circling around without achieving something. It feels stagnant and boring. But again if there’s something unique of it I will watch it. Notable example is Danshi Kokosei no Nichijou. This anime is just too damn hilarious and there’s a lot of relatable stories for me. Besides there’s Sugita Tomokazu, my favorite seiyuu (Voice Actor). The other slice of life anime is Azumanga Daioh, I can relate a lot to that anime and it’s just sooo heart warming watching it. And as for manga, I really love Yotsuba&! which is created by the same person, Kiyohiko Azuma

I also tend to avoid teenage love story... there are two reasons why, first of all I'm not a teenager anymore *well duh!*
Secondly, well, teenagers nowadays have different problems with teenagers back in my days and that made me hard to relate on problems that they had in the anime these days. And sometimes the story is just too stretch out because of the emotionally unstable teenager. They don't know what they do or what they want. Damn it teenagers! GET A GRIP! Seriously though, every time I watched this kind of anime, I was like Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon

But again, if there's something unique from the genre I'd watch it. Take this season's Ore Monogatari! for example. It offers something different that other teenager love story don't have. The main protagonist Gouda Takeo is an epic big guy and not the ikemen type of guy and he is in love with a girl named Yamato, who obviously is in love with him but he didn't realize it because he is just too dense lol. But they finally end up together. I really enjoyed watching that series because I myself has a big body like him... but less muscular lol. If I was still single and watching this anime, it would give me hope to have a girlfriend who will love me the way I am hahaha
Thankfully I already have girlfriend and she accepted the way I am now. So don't give up on hope guys!

Lastly, I tend to avoid the shameless promotion anime, or in other words, anime that sells products in their anime or to put simply, Anime that promotes toys like Beyblade, Let's & Go, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Vanguard, and so on.
It's just like a shameless product placement and sometimes the story just don't make any sense.

"but this is an anime, why it have to make sense!?"
It has to make sense, anime is more enjoyable if it is consistent with its own logic (Like JoJo's Bizzare Adventure for example lol). The last anime with this genre that I watched is Gundam Build Fighters TRY. It was a fun show, and I loved Gundam series. But, it wasn't consistent about its concept. And there's a lot of cheesy line in this anime.. It feels like watching UtaPri, One of the best cheesy line in GBFT that I remembered is:

"Please stop this battle, I don't want to make your Gunpla cry"

First of all, it's just a toy, it won't cry
secondly, YOU ARE IN A GUNPLA FIGHTING TOURNAMENT! WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!? YOU HAVE TO BEAT YOUR OPPONENT IF YOU WANT TO WIN!
*sigh*
Can you imagine if you are in a fighting game tournament and someone says that? For example it's a Street Fighter game tournament.
"Stop this battle! I don't want to make your Ryu cry"
seriously... =__=

Well that’s just my personal opinion guys, I loved anime in general, but since I don't have so much spare time to watch it again, I became a picky person when I want to watch it. Why waste my time on something that is not worth watching for me? If you don’t agree with me, that’s all right. Everybody has their personal taste amirite? Thanks for reading!
